Coffinhop – Two Horror Stories for Halloween
Halloween is not far away, and the chill is in the air. What better way to celebrate this spookiest of holidays with some chilling stories. I present to you two stories that I’ve recently read that fit the bill perfectly.
Revenant – Neil Dixon
First up is a short story by moustached surfer and absinthe connoisseur Neil Dixon. ‘Revenant’ is a tale of revenge and retribution. It has a wonderful feel to it reminiscent of American Werewolf in London with the cozy pub and eery goings-on.
How about this for an opener:
“THREE MURDERS A YEAR for the past ten years. Thirty local bodies so ruined that the villagers of St. John on the Water were forced to perform a head count to identify each victim. Death had become routine.”
Yeah, I was hooked straight away.
You can read an excerpt on Neil’s blog, and it’s only .99cents – bargain! I love the cover, too. Go check it out I’m sure you’ll be impressed much as I was.
The Shelter – James Everington
This is a little bigger, a novella of 15.5k words, so plenty of time to get your creep on. James is an excellent writer and wit this story taps into a scene that is probably quite familiar of british people who were kids in the eighties. James creates a fantastically gripping tale that is chilling and thrilling and perfect for Halloween.
Here’s the blurb:
“It’s a long, drowsy summer at the end of the 1980s, and Alan Dean and three of his friends cross the fields behind their village to look for a rumoured WW2 air raid shelter. Only half believing that it even exists beyond schoolboy gossip, the four boys nevertheless feel an odd tension and unease. And when they do find the shelter, and go down inside it, the strange and horrifying events that follow will test their adolescent friendships to breaking point, and affect the rest of their lives…”
Just 0.86p this is terrific value of money. Read more on Jame’s blog.
